KUANTAN: More personnel from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency will be deployed this Hari Raya as compared to last year.
Its director-general Datuk Mohd Amdan Kurish said this was part of its preparation to face an influx of illegal immigrants hoping to enter Malaysia before the festive period.
He said 2,300 personnel would be deployed to keep out illegals compared to 1,700 last year.
The agency, he added, would also intensify patrols at several ‘hot spots’ identified as the main entry points for illegal immigrants.
“The additional 600 personnel are needed to increase our preparedness at sea and on land.
“We foresee an increase in the inflow of illegals two weeks before and after Hari Raya; so we need to enhance our monitoring,” he told reporters after attending the breaking of fast with the agency’s eastern region personnel here on Tuesday. — The Star
