MTUC : DOSH Must Immediately Probe Ammonia Deaths

PETALING JAYA, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has called on the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to investigate the death of six people due to ammonia inhalation in Tanjung Karang yesterday.

It vice-president, A. Balasubramaniam, who is also the congress' DOSH committee chairman, said DOSH should make the findings public and take action against the employer, if negligence was proved.

Six workers, including two Bangladeshis, were killed when they inhaled ammonia believed to have leaked from a freezer at the worksite. Six other workers were hospitalised.

Balasubramaniam told Bernama today that the employer should make arrangements to send the bodies of two foreigners to their home country soon. "The employer should also pay appropriate compensation to the next-of-kin of the deceased and injured workers." he added.

Balasubramaniam and his committee members visited the injured workers at the Tanjung Karang Hospital last night and inspected the worksite this morning. He said it was regrettable that despite the intense campaign by the government and unions to reduce workplace accidents, they recurred. -- BERNAMA
