Maids: Malaysia Awaits Indonesia's Response On Counter-proposals

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has submitted counter-proposals to Indonesia on the recruitment of maids and is awaiting a response, Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said.

"We will wait for their response before we can fix the next meeting," he told Bernama in response to the call by the Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa) to speed up negotiations between the two countries.

Papa president Datuk Raja Zulkepley Dahalan said both sides did not meet as expected last month and that any delay would affect both Malaysian and Indonesian recruitment agencies.

He was also concerned that it might lead to Indonesian maids being brought into the country illegally.

The Indonesian government had temporarily suspended the export of maids to Malaysia recently following complaints of abuse by their employers.

Following that, officials from both countries met and reached initial agreement on several issues including giving maids a weekly day off and insurance coverage.
