Four Robbers Shot Dead When Attacking Police

SEREMBAN, Aug 24 (Bernama) -- Four robbers, believed to be Indonesians, were shot dead when they attacked police with machetes and fired shots from a revolver at a tunnel beneath the North-South Expressway at Km276.3, early Monday.

Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh said before the 5.20am incident, the four men who were in a Proton Aeroback with plate number WJP5728 were stopped by police on an anti-crime operation in the Labu area.

"When our men got out of the patrol cars, the suspects suddenly sped off towards Nilai and entered a quarry road before crashing into the tunnel at a Sime Darby plantation," he told reporters, here, Monday.

He said the suspects came out of their car where one of them fired two shots from a .38 revolver but did not hit the target as the revolver became faulty.

Police returned fire, killing the suspects, and found two long machetes, a sickle-like weapon, a .38 revolver and a crowbar at the scene of the incident.

Osman said the robbers had been targeting isolated homes in the Malay settlements of Labu and Nilai.

He said that on Aug 21 at about 1.45am, the robbers had fled with cash, a computer, handphone and watch, all valued at RM5,000, from a house and 40 minutes later, they robbed another house of items worth RM1,500.

The car they had been driving around is also believed to have been stolen from the commercial area of Terminal 2, here.

Meanwhile, state CID chief ACP Mohd Zaki Masroh said a patron at the Bistro R n R in Lukut was slightly injured when a man fired a shot in a robbery at 1am today at the outlet.

The other patrons and the bistro owner were, however, unhurt in the incident.
